Welcome to the marsh! This website’s function is to inform and educate people of all ages about the greening of the privately owned home and yard. We hope to have a virtual school field trip as well as a how-to area with more specific instructions on everything from composting to installing solar panels and rain barrels! And some day some streaming real time video that will capture some of the amazing wildlife visitors. In the meantime, we have some photos (go to Pool to Pond to find the galleries).
There are four main areas in MarshLand: Pool to Pond; Crap to Compost: Lawn to Life: and the "About us" section. Future areas include Grid to Gold and a Homeschoolers Virtual Field Trip. These areas are all being built/worked on as I type this.
As you’ll read in our “About Us” section, this is a life long, ongoing project. MarshLand really is a life style, one that creates habitat for wildlife as well as a wonderful retreat for humans! And it’s right in the middle of a suburban area.
Please read on and check back often, as more and more information is added.
I know, it's really nice looking isn't it. But it took constant cleaning, sweeping (it's under 5 huge live oaks!) and the adding of chemicals, mostly chlorine in very heavy 2+ gal. containers.
So one day, after scooping poor dead frogs out of the nasty chemical filled water, I got the bright idea of turning my pool into a pond. I didn't swim in it, my son didn't swim in it, what was the point? The 24 hour filtration was costing a small fortune to run, the gas spa heater was hard to operate and the chemicals were of concern as they were mostly toxic.
Step one, just turn off everything and stop adding chemicals. I'll get into this whole thing in more detail later but for now as far as how it all got started, I decided to make a five year experiment out of this. So in September of 2002 I let it all go back to nature. And last summer, 2007, I had crystal clear water the entire year.
